The VFD industry has created this common question by shortening terminology. The term "single phase VFD" usually means the variable frequency drive operates from single phase ac power. There are (or were) a few VFD manufacturers that do make VFDs with single phase outputs. If you have this type of VFD, you should contact the VFD supplier to determine the answer.

The proliferation of VFDs has been enormous due to the global low energy consumption's applications demand. I was basically put out of a job selling carbon brushes because all the plastic extruder companies who used a lot of DC motors converted to AC motors and VFDs to lower costs and to improve production. Fan and pump applications are still the area where the most cost savings can be achieved by variable frequency drives.

The VFD (variable frequency drive) is more like a servo amplifier and absolutely needs speed and position feedback to operate properly with maximum torque available. The PM AC motor has "Rare Earth" permanent magnets of the rotor. There are no windings on the rotor. With the permanent magnets on the rotor the motor is a synchronous. Example a 7.5HP 4 pole PM AC motor at 60 Hz the speed fully loaded would be 1800 rpm. The PM AC motor has very low inertia and can change speed nearly instantaneously.

Consult the VFD manufacturer for specifics, but most VFDs will operate properly with output wiring up to 100 feet. Longer lengths may present a problem. Output reactors often reduce the problem encountered with longer lead lengths. Consult your variable frequency drive supplier for details on the line reactors. Make sure to install adequately sized wire for acceptable voltage drop.

The other aspect which was a selling point when VFDs first appeared, and it is a valid point, VFD on pump and fan applications are large energy savings can be achieved by controlling the motor below base speed. The feeling of achievement when you commission a variable speed drive and it performs just how you designed it is gratifying. The capabilities of VFDs now compared to 30 years or more ago are so much greater.

It is possible to install variable speed drives on air compressors, either screw or piston type. The range of control is maximum of probably 2:1 on Frequency. It is probably necessary to start the compressor at full frequency, particularly if it is starting with a full head of pressure to generate and it can then be adjusted to the desired output. If it is on automatic control it will require starting the manual mode and the switching to the automatic mode. If this is a large horsepower motor, say 75 HP and above, they a mechanical variable speed drive might be recommended due to temperature climb with the VFD.

This paper is intended to be a general guide only for the installation of VFDs on single phase power supplies. The two supply voltages discussed will include 220V (230V, 240V) and 480V Single Wire Earth Return (SWER) systems.
The standard VFD is designed to operate from both a single phase & three phase power supply making it ideal for Single Wire Earth Return Line or single phase supply systems.
  • The standard VFD can operate from a 480VAC single phase power supply (Single Wire Earth Return) and provide a controlled 415V three phase output to the motor.
  • The standard VFD (or equivalent) can operate from a 220VAC single phase power supply and provide a controlled 220V 3 phase output to the motor.
When selecting the VFD it is important to determine the motors full load current at the voltage in which it will operate. To do this, it is useful to know the relationship between star and line voltages & currents.

This is especially important when a 415V star / 220V Delta motor is being used on a single phase 220V power system.

Depending on the various possible parallel return circuit paths, and their individual resistances, unintended currents may be conducted or induced into the VFD control or power circuits. As to whether these conditions will result in damage to the inverter.

Trying to get exact figures on cost savings between fixed speed motors with some form of external flow control and using variable speed drives for direct flow control is an impossible task in actual applications. An additional consideration is that if you are looking at total cost savings and overall system efficiency you have to consider the efficiency of the VFD, the motor and the mechanical system. The efficiency values are affected by drive hardware employed in the design, the switching algorithms used and VFD tuning and the efficiency of the variable speed drive is not constant at all operating speeds. The same is true for the motor.
VFD Panel VFD panels adopt enclosed cabinet structure, generally, the protection class is IP20, IP21, IP30, and some panels may reach IP64, IP65 and even IP66 where the application environments need weatherproof, waterproof. The panels surface are coating spray by suppliers, and easy to install in parallel, the panel top configure bus and wiring the VFD keypad to the panel's door for operating directly.

Manufacturers also equip with a variety of instruments and indicators inside the variable frequency drive panels, such as voltmeter, ammeter, frequency meter, and power indicator light, alarm lights, running lights, power frequency lights etc, which will monitor the VFD control panels working status in real time.
